Generating Energy on Traditional Wooden Barns

Located between Amsterdam and Volendam, Broek in Waterland is a village situated on peat soil. Most homes in the historic village center do not have a pile foundation and are made of wood. Due to the heritage protected status of the village, the installation of traditional solar panels is not permitted. However, the sight of wooden clapboard siding is common throughout the area.

By extending this aesthetic feature into the roof, a natural and seamless effect is created, making it virtually impossible to see that solar roof tiles have been integrated. Furthermore, with a weight of just 20kg/m², these solar roof tiles are much lighter than traditional roofing tiles, ensuring the building’s structural integrity while blending perfectly with the village’s charming appearance.
