Sustainability Beyond Today
When you choose solar panels, you’re making a decision for clean energy, lower energy bills, and a smaller environmental footprint. At Solinso, our customers also choose our solar roof tiles because of their seamless integration into the roof, combining design with performance.
But true sustainability doesn’t end the day your panels are installed. The real question is:
what happens in 20 to 30 years, when solar panels reach the end of their life?
The Hidden Challenge of PV Waste
Solar panels are built to last decades, but they are not eternal. At some point, today’s panels will need to be replaced. That creates a growing challenge: end-of-life solar panel waste.
- A typical panel is made of glass, plastics, silicon, and metals such as aluminum and copper.
- Many of these materials can be recycled, but the process is complex.
- Without proper systems in place, Europe risks facing a mountain of PV waste in the future.
This is the side of the energy transition that often remains out of sight. But ignoring it would undermine the very sustainability we are working to achieve.
Stichting OPEN: The Dutch Solution
Fortunately, in the Netherlands, this challenge is already being addressed. Stichting OPEN (Organisatie Producentenverantwoordelijkheid E-waste Nederland) is the national foundation responsible for managing electronic waste on behalf of producers.
Through its well-known Wecycle system, OPEN has established a collection network of over 13,000 intake points across the Netherlands. Each year, millions of kilograms of appliances, lamps, and batteries are given a second life or recycled responsibly.
Stichting OPEN has taken on the task of preparing for the future recycling of solar panels. At the moment, it’s estimated that in 2040 alone, between 1.0 – 1.5 million end-of-life solar panels will need to be recycled in the Netherlands. According to a TNO Report, the volume of PV waste will continue to rise rapidly after 2040, making recycling an even greater challenge.
Building Solutions Today for Tomorrow’s Waste
Stichting OPEN is not waiting for the problem to arrive; it is acting today. Together with partners such as Holland Solar and Stichting ZRN, OPEN is laying the groundwork for effective solar panel recycling.
- Pilot projects are underway to develop new techniques for panel recycling.
- Research and innovation focus on recovering valuable raw materials, such as silicon and rare metals.
- Circular economy strategies are being designed to ensure old panels become resources for new products.
This proactive approach means that when the first big wave of end-of-life solar panels arrives, the Netherlands will already have the systems in place to handle it.
What This Means for Solinso Customers
At Solinso, we believe responsibility doesn’t end once a product leaves our warehouse. That’s why we are committed to working with Stichting OPEN.
When you choose a Solinso solar roof, you are not only investing in a sustainable and beautiful solution for your home today, you are also ensuring that your roof will be part of a circular system tomorrow.
In 20 years, when your solar tiles may need to be replaced, Stichting OPEN will make sure they are collected and recycled responsibly. Instead of becoming waste, your panels will become raw materials for the next generation of clean energy solutions.
A peace of Mind for the Full Lifecycle
True sustainability is about more than clean power. It’s about designing for today and planning for tomorrow.
